This time of year is always such a challenge with food. I used to eat myself into food comas all year long but, at this time of the year I would not be able to control myself around all the holiday foods. My sweet tooth used to get totally waaaaaaaay out of control. Especially when the weather starts to cool off, the sun dresses are put away and the sweaters and bulky clothes come out to play. I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR. Now, I’m no longer afraid of food, it doesn’t control me anymore, in fact, I hardly even think about it anymore. Crazy, right?! I’m serious! YES, you can even lose weight during the holidays if you really want it bad enough. HOW, you ask? Ask yourself this question: How Bad Do You Really Want It? If you want something bad enough, you will do whatever it takes to make it happen, right? Some people call this your, why.
What is your Why? Why do you want what it is that you want? For me, I NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER want to get back to where I was before I got healthy. Now that I know what it feels like to always feel so great, when I eat poorly, miss workouts, not get enough sleep or whatever I feel awful, like a really bad hangover. But, it lasts for a long time and I can’t get rid of it. I CRAVE feeling great. It’s the most amazing feeling to always feel ready to start your day, have enough natural energy, want to workout, always have a smile on my face and have a spring in my step.
How do you avoid the Halloween candy, holiday office treats, holiday parties and of course the main events, Thanksgiving and Christmas? The answer is simple, You don’t. You don’t avoid anything. If you are like me, you want to be able to enjoy your life without it revolving around food and the guilty feelings it brings. Do not deprive yourself of anything that you enjoy. You know that eating in moderation is always the way to go but, so many people really have no idea how much is too much or a proper portion size. I hear all the time from clients that they don’t have the will power or they will just wait until January 1st. Let me tell you, that is a bunch of bullshit. I can sit here and dish out a list of tips on how to lose weight or how to avoid eating too many holiday cookies. Look, at the end of the day, it all comes down to two things – How bad do you want it and what is your why? Once you know these things the rest of it will come easy. You are never on vacation from your body. NEVER. There will always be a party, dinner and drinks with friends, an actual vacation or just your daily routine. Learning how to establish healthy daily habits and actually doing them everyday is what will bring you results.
If you focus on results you will never change. If focus on change, you will get results.
Here’s an awesome autumn recipe. I honestly can’t remember where I originally found it so I can’t credit anyone but, whoever made it up is a genius! It’s so yummy!!!!
Apple French Toast
2 apples (your favorite type), sliced (approx 10 slices)
2 pasture-raised and Organic eggs, whisked
1 Tbsp almond milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 Tbsp coconut oil
dash sea salt
2 Tbsp REAL maple syrup
1 Tbsp almond butter (or your favorite nut butter) (optional)
1. In a bowl, whisk eggs with almond milk and vanilla extract until slightly frothy.
2. Heat up a large skillet on medium heat with coconut oil
3. Dip the apple slices in the batter. Let sit for 3 minutes. Take each one out of the bowl slowly, letting any excess egg drop off and carefully place each slice onto the heated pan.
4. Let slices cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes on each side. (Taking them off too soon will make the egg stick to the pan). Be careful of burning them. Flip and cook the other side until crispy.
5. Sprinkle cinnamon, sea salt and maple syrup on top. If you want some protein, in a bowl, mix 1 tbsp almond butter with 2 tbsp maple syrup for a maple-almond butter topping.
