Most people believe that cravings are a problem. I don’t think so, I actually think they are helpful to understand what your body needs. Chocolate, bread, steak, eggs, french fries, candy bars, ice cream – it really doesn’t matter what you crave. Your body is ALWAYS telling you what it needs, it’s just up to you to understand what your body is telling you. Do you crave sugar, carbs, or salt? Do you just get so hungry that you don’t crave anything specific, you just want to eat anything? So many people tend to go hungry all day and ignore the body’s cravings for food. This is usually what makes people binge. In an attempt to lose weight, people skip breakfast, go off to work, maybe have a mid morning cup of coffee to keep going and then “settle” on a salad for lunch. Somehow they make it through the day, but by the time they get home after work they are starving. Being busy all day keeps you distracted from listening to your body and the urgent messages your stomach is trying to tell you. Then you realize, “I am so hungry!” Then overeat heavy foods at dinner until you feel stuffed and uncomfortable. The next morning the binge cycle starts all over again, most likely not eating breakfast because you’re still full from dinner which is still digesting.
So what is your body trying to tell you? “Hey fatty, put down the candy bar!” NO it’s not saying that. A sugar craving is simply the body asking for energy. The body turns sugar into glucose which gives you energy. It just depends upon the type of sugar. If you’re eating processed foods, the type of sugar will give you a short boost of energy and then you will crash. If you eat natural carbohydrates like fruits and veggies the body will take that natural sugar mixed with the fiber and it will actually sustain your energy for a longer period of time. Any processed food will give you short bursts of energy because of the fake sugars used to create them. Your blood sugar spikes and drops quickly with short bursts of energy. Eating real, natural foods like organic whole grains, fruits or veggies will provide your body a more balanced blood sugar so you can maintain your feeling of fullness until the next natural time to eat.
Carbs provide a lot of the energy your body needs for your body to function normally, such as heartbeat, breathing, digestion and exercise. Eating the right carbs is the same as eating the right sugars. Processed foods are loaded with chemicals and deformed and denatured carbs. So the processed foods are basically killing your diet and you at the same time. When your blood sugar goes to low, that is when you are most going to feel weak, drowsy, confused, dizzy and hungry. That is when it is especially important to make a healthy choice for a snack. A healthy choice would be to eat a carrot instead of a cookie.
A sugar craving is as natural as our body needing air to breathe. What we are actually hungry for is Nutrition. And what I mean by that is real food that doesn’t come in a box or a drive thru window. Food that will actually feed your body what it needs. Real food contains actual vitamins and minerals along with the sugars, carbs, proteins, etc. So many people are eating way to much “franken foods” and are actually suffering from malnutrition.
I can help you lay out a plan to incorporate more real food into your daily life and get over those cravings and afternoon slumps once and for all.
What do you crave most and what time of day? What do you snack on? Pay attention to your cravings this week and keep good notes of what you are eating, it will make a big difference.
